In March, Operation Free traveled to Carson City, Nevada, to host events and meet with legislators interested in pursuing clean energy solutions for their state. Due to  Nevada’s unique relationship with veterans and abundance of natural resources, it was the ideal place to engage veterans, elected officials, and citizens on issues of renewable energy and national security.

March 22 was a day packed with events, beginning with a national security discussion on energy and climate change that featured Truman President and CEO Michael Breen and Colonel Steve Seroka, a retired 30-year U.S. Air Force Fighter Pilot. Later that evening, Operation Free hosted a screening of The Burden, a documentary about the consequences of oil dependence on our national security, followed by a panel discussion which featured Michael Breen and Jennifer Taylor Esq., Executive Director of the Clean Energy Project. The screening was hosted at the Nevada State Museum and was well-received by state legislators and their staff.

In addition to these public events, Operation Free staff met with individual elected officials and members of their staff to discuss energy security in more detail. Michael Breen, Colonel Seroka, and Jennifer Taylor spoke with several state representatives on both sides of the aisle, affording the lawmakers an opportunity to learn more about what they can do to pursue renewable energy development in Nevada. Most, if not all, of these representatives are members of committees related to natural resources and energy oversight, which therefore make them uniquely equipped to tackle these issues in the legislature. Among these were Senators James Settelmeyer and Joe Hardy, and Assemblyman Jim Wheeler. Operation Free representatives also met with Governor Sandoval’s office, as well as U.S. Senator Heller’s office to discuss how Nevada can be part of the national renewable energy conversation.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank both Governor Sandoval and Senator Heller for welcoming our team and supporting the mission of Operation Free. We look forward to seeing what’s in store for Nevada’s renewable energy future!
