Arizona’s raw solar potential is enormous. Arizona is No. 1 in the country for installed solar power based on population. Arizona’s success is driven by two supportive public policies that incentivize renewable sources: the Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) and the Net Metering Standard.
The Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) requires utilities to acquire 15 percent of its power from renewable resources by 2025, with 30 percent derived from distributed energy generation. The Net Energy Metering Standard allows solar-powered homeowners and businesses to receive credits for excess power provided back to the electricity grid.
Economic Drivers and Jobs
Arizona’s solar industry directly and indirectly employs 16,000 individuals. Despite this, these policies are under attack by fossil fuel advocates and state utility companies who are attempting to rollback standards.
