Operation Free Statement on Senator Blunt’s Bill to Rollback Fuel Economy Standards

Washington, D.C. – In response to Senator Roy Blunt’s (R-MO) counterproductive bill to roll back the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration fuel economy program this afternoon, Operation Free President and CEO Michael Breen released the following statement:

“Today, Senator Blunt and his colleagues introduced a bill to weaken clean car and fuel economy standards, which will hurt Americans’ pocketbooks and weaken our national security at the same time. Transportation in the United States is still our achilles heel: we are drastically dependent on oil to power the American lifestyle. This bill will result in an additional 350 billion barrels of oil being burned, increasing America’s reliance on oil and exacerbating the devastating effects of climate change.”

“Despite the overwhelming consensus that reducing oil dependence is integral to national security, this bill prioritizes putting money in the pockets of Big Oil over making the right, long-term choice for prosperity at home and stability abroad. Senator Blunt and his colleagues should reconsider this bill and listen to our veterans and national security experts who know that becoming more dependent on oil is moving backwards rather than forwards and putting us all at greater risk.”
